Off-Site Projects

The Secret Arboretum
(work in progress)
The PITT studio space is located on the western edge of the old Aboretum plot which was cleared in the 1900's. Through the ongoing donation and plantation of trees from seed into our neighbours back yards we hope to make new freinds and
re-establish the secret Arboretum

Artothlon
Vilnius, Lithuania.

‘Art-o-thlon’ is the first international championship linking contemporary art with the popular media. This project seeks to present the birth act of a piece of art as special form of active relation with reality. Its format resembles the structure of the Olympic games and its content – intellectual games.

Art-o-thlon features art projects created and implemented under the watch of filming cameras and covered live on TV and on the web. The project blends the friendly atmosphere, creative joy, academic knowledge, the pleasure of contesting and public attention.

This project submerges participants (students, artists, teachers) and the outcomes of their activity (works of art) into the context of popular culture. Show business is the theme and artistic technique of this project. Art-o-thlon could be referred to as the accelerator of cultural particles which seeks a deep collision of popular culture with conceptual art in the hope to capture the often unnoticed hybridized cultural anomalies, the processes of a piece of art and the outcomes of creation.

CHARLIE HURCOMBE

My work explores and promotes the tensions which exist between visual and tactile experience. With particular emphasis placed on the coexistence of disrupted form and reflective shiny surface my work makes reference to both sculpture and painting.

The combined utilisation of steel - often stainless - and household gloss paint (plus assorted fixtures and fittings) has been a significant characteristic of my 3D work. The application of gloss paint makes reference to both a protected and decorated surface whilst the geometric design suggests concerns associated with attraction and caution and conveys a heightened sense of physical disruption.

The use of manufactured items such as wooden handles is significant in promoting issues of interaction, function and scale. The temptation and desire to touch is negated by the objects status whilst being simultaneously encouraged through the presence of functional attributes.

The seemingly autonomous object is presented in an implied state of change - an isolated disrutive moment somehow made tangible.

TIM ROBOTTOM

As an artist and collector of detritus my practice is concerned with issues of contemporary British culture, with a particular emphasis on commercial and consumer waste in our post-industrial society. Locating, negotiating and gathering discarded objects, materials and fragments, then assembling them in site-specific, temporary constructs or formal arrangements, I attempt to bring new life to these rejected everyday artefacts.

  NICOLE MORTIBOYS

JULY - AUGUST 2007

There is a tension in the air, [a tight line].
We are constantly informed by the autonomous nervous system, i.e. the media.
Be ready for invasion.
We need to be vigilant and on our guard.
Check under your seat.
Be wary of anyone that looks shifty,
Raincoat, dark glasses, fedora, Inspector Clueso, Peter Sellars, most artists
You get the picture.
We are on constant high alert, wired and then?
PUFF.
Nothing for now. The absurd attempt at remaining unharmed, either on a large or small scale, is what the work circles around.
